Glorious Goodwood Hospitality Packages
Tuesday 28 July - Saturday 1 August 2009
The 3rd Duke of Richmond was match-racing his horses against the King and their friends at Goodwood more than 200 years ago and the heritage of excellent sport and glamorous entertainment lives on. Today the five-day July Festival is affectionately known as Glorious Goodwood. It is considered to be the final event of the summer and for many people it is the highlight in which all the elements that make up a great event collide. The glamour of top-class racing, mixed with the outstanding beauty of the racecourse, set high up on the Downs and the famously stylish dress code, all go to make Glorious Goodwood unquestionably the chicest invitation of the summer.
“Glorious Goodwood” and fashion have gone hand in hand since 1906 and the festival has become the home of quintessential English summer fashion. It has always been about effortless chic at Goodwood, and coupled with some of the best horseracing in Europe, it really is “the place to be and be seen”. There is a no more English scene than a glorious July day, with champagne flowing and strawberries spilling from the glass fountain on the Beech Lawn, an exciting racecard and the military band of the Royal Green Jackets serenading the crowd, as it ebbs and flows from course to parade ring.
Goodwood pays attention to the details which enables you to relax and enjoy precious time with your guests. The result is a marvellous atmosphere and the perfect environment for building relationships away from the usual distractions. ‘Don’t forget me for Goodwood next year’, is a frequent request in thank you letters. So why not entertain your guests in style this summer at the world’s most beautiful racecourse; the perfect place to enjoy horseracing and socialising.

An Outline of the 2009 Festival Meeting
The pinnacle of Goodwood’s racing season is undoubtedly the world famous five day meeting at the end of July. Generally regarded as the official closing highlight of the English Summer Season, the Festival Meeting also known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’ attracts the very best from the international world of horse racing, as well as the crème de la crème of English Society. The mood however, is relaxed yet stylish, with linen suits and Panama hats for the gentlemen and soft flowing dresses for the ladies. It was King Edward VII who introduced the Panamas and linen suits and it was he who said that the Festival was, ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’. Goodwood has managed to preserve the unique blend of social occasion and sporting excellence which makes the Festival the ultimate sporting hospitality event.
Tuesday 28 July - Goodwood Style Day: The first day of the meeting gets off to a flying start with three Group races, the highlight of which is the Betfair Cup. This is a race for three year olds and upwards over seven furlongs and as a Group 2 contest is a highly sought after prize. It is supported by two Group 3 races, the Betfair Molecomb Stakes and the Betfair Gordon Stakes, with the latter considered to be a trial for the St Leger, the final ‘classic’ of the season. Tuesday is always an excellent day for entertaining as guests and racing fans ease their way into a week of glorious hospitality and racing.
Wednesday 29 July - Olympic Day: Goodwood’s richest race of the season takes place on the second day of the Festival. The Sussex Stakes, sponsored by BGC, was first run in 1841 and is now one of the major mile races of the year, not only in the United Kingdom but throughout Europe. The stature of this race was upheld in 2008 when Henrythenavigator, winner of the 2,000 Guineas in England and Ireland, was the marginal winner in a thrilling finish from another very talented performer, Raven’s Pass.
Thursday 30 July - Ladies Day: Style and elegance are bywords for Goodwood but it is Thursday, which has become known as “Ladies Day”, when everyone pays particular attention to dressing the part. This is the day to see and be seen. On the course, one of Goodwood’s oldest and most popular races takes place. The Goodwood Cup was first run in 1812 and is another of our Group 2 races.
Friday 31 July - Feel Good Friday: As the Festival heads towards its dramatic weekend finale, Friday’s feature race is another Group 2. The Richmond Stakes is one of the most prestigious races for two year olds in the racing calendar. The race is named after the 6th Duke of Richmond who was renowned for his lavish entertaining throughout raceweek, a tradition that has continued at Goodwood to the present day. Also on the Friday is the Heritage Handicap, formerly known as the GoldenMile. This is one of Europe’s richest handicaps and it always delivers very competitive racing, adding to the great sense of occasion prevalent throughout the week.
Saturday 1 August - Stewards Cup Day: The week reaches its climax and the racecourse bears witness to the greatest racing spectacle of the week. Blue Square is the sponsor of the entire day, such is its popularity. The Stewards’ Cup is the proverbial cavalry charge as 28 horses hurtle down the six furlong straight of one of the fastest racecourses in Europe to create a truly incredible sight. Anyone who manages to select the winner should be buying drinks all round! The other feature race is the Nassau Stakes, and whilst this race has only been running for ten years its stature has grown to the point where it is now considered the best middle distance race for fillies anywhere in Europe. This is a Group 1 race and the field is invariably packed with previous Group 1 winners. Like the Stewards Cup, this is a truly great occasion and it is entirely appropriate that the week should end with two such memorable races.
