Der Fliegende Holländer

Music by Richard Wagner
Running time: 2 hours 25 minutes (No Interval)
Performed in German with English surtitles
23, 26 February & 1, 4, 10 March 2009

Three important debuts matched by an intense new production in an imposing setting bring Wagner’s great opera, The Flying Dutchman, back to The Royal Opera repertory. Tim Albery’s interpretation of Wagner’s early masterpiece of the supernatural in conflict with the human takes its lead from the claustrophobic life of a northern fishing town dominated by the sea, its trawlers and the men who follow the hard life on board.

The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House is under the direction for the first time of Marc Albrecht, who has conducted the work at Bayreuth, and the full-scale forces of the Royal Opera Chorus are showcased in the huge chorus scenes. The power of the music and drama is intensified with the opera presented as Wagner preferred, in an unbroken performance of a single act: the music becomes a continuous and tempestuous.
