Andy Murray: I must get physically stronger

21/09/2010

Andy Murray has admitted he must improve his physical condition if he is to have any chance of victory in front of Wimbledon package customers and fans at other majors.

The world number four was among the favourites at the recent US Open, after beating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the Toronto Masters in the build up to the Grand Slam event.

However, a disappointing showing in which the Briton was beset with fitness problems resulted in him being knocked out in four sets in the third round at the hands of Stanislas Wawrinka.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Murray said he needs to toughen up if he is to challenge world number one Nadal in future.

"I need to get physically stronger, improve my game and then I'll give myself the chance to beat him," he remarked.

The 23-year-old was beaten by Nadal in front of 2010 Wimbledon package customers at the semi-final stage, with the Spaniard winning 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.
