Andy Murray has spoken of his disappointment at having to miss the Madrid Open tennis tournament with a back injury.

Speaking to the tournament website, the Scot said: "I always love coming to Madrid so it is a big disappointment. I look forward to returning next year."

Murray won the competition in 2008 before the surface was changed from a hard court to clay and his absence this year gives him less chance to improve his game on the red surface before the French Open.

It means fans booking Wimbledon 2012 hospitality could still be seeing Murray chasing his first grand slam next month.

The event in south London could also see the next phase of Novak Djokovic's bid to win all the grand slams in a year if he can dethrone Rafael Nadal as king of clay in the French Open.

Nadal won at Roland Garros for the sixth time last year, equalling Bjorn Borg's record.
