The left-arm spinner has been called into the Australia squad to take on Pakistan in two Test matches and two Twenty20 games in England this summer.
He has been added to the team after Nathan Hauritz, the off-spinner who played an important role in the 2009 Ashes series, was ruled out of the clashes as the result of a foot injury.
Andrew Hilditch, Australia's chairman of selectors, said the young New South Welshman has earned the chance to shine in front of fans with Twenty20 tickets
Hilditch described him as "a good young all-round cricketer who deserves his chance".
O'Keefe has played just eight Twenty20 matches for his state side, in which he has taken only one wicket and scored 12 runs.
However, his first-class average with the bat is a far more impressive 52.14, including a highest score of 91.
