The BBC is to review the way it draws up the shortlist for the Sports Personality of the Year award, following controversy over this year's all-male composition.

Following the announcement, much criticism and discussion has surrounded the gender issue, with swimmer Rebecca Adlington among those suggesting there were several good female candidates.

However, she told BBC Sport the ten men chosen are "brilliant" and that while it is a "shame" there are no women in there this year, the 2011 field is very strong.

The BBC commented: "We stand by the current process but have committed to take on board what happened this year.

"We will review the shortlisting process for next year's show."

Those hoping Adlington and her fellow female swimmers can put themselves in contention next year through gold-winning Olympic performances may wish to enjoy hospitality packages at the London 2012 games while seeing them in action.

Swimming events at the London Aquatics Centre will be held between July 28th and August 4th.
