Both Williams sisters defeated at Wimbledon

Wimbledon hospitality guests attending the venue at SW19 yesterday may have witnessed a series of shocks in the women's draw, as both Williams sisters and world number one Caroline Wozniacki crashed out of the competition.

Defending champion Serena Williams, who was returning to action at a Grand Slam for the first time in a year at the tournament, fell victim to Marion Bartoli of France in straight sets, losing 6-3 7-6 (8-6), while sister Venus lost 6-2 6-3 against Tsvetana Pironkova.

Afterwards, Venus said: "This was definitely not our best day. We both envisioned seeing this day going a little bit differently."

Meanwhile, top seed Wozniacki's quest for her first Grand Slam win ended as she was beaten in three sets by Slovenia's Dominika Cibulkova, losing 1-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.

However, in the men's draw, fans of British tennis may have been pleased to see Andy Murray triumph over Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 6-2.
