Corey Pavin announces 'difficult' Ryder Cup picks

08/09/2010

Corey Pavin has said he faced a "difficult" choice in deciding which players should represent the US in front of Ryder Cup packages customers.

The American team captain already knew the identity of eight of his squad, with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson and Jim Furyk having secured automatic selection.

It left Pavin to reveal yesterday (September 7th 2010) that Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson would also get the chance to play in front of fans with Ryder Cup packages against Europe in October.

Writing on the official Ryder Cup website ahead of the announcement, he commented: "This will be a very difficult evening.

"I wish I could take the top 20 players to Celtic Manor with me but, unfortunately, I cannot."

Prior to the wildcard picks being confirmed, pundits had widely speculated that Woods - the world number one - would be given the nod, despite his indifferent recent form.
