David James desperate to start at South Africa World Cup

David James has spoken of his intense desire to play at the South Africa World Cup later this year.

Speaking to the Sun, he recalled operations he had had on his knee and shoulder last year and admitted that his desperation to play for England could have led to him jeopardising his recovery.

"Rather than having a rehab programme geared for my fitness, it was geared around playing for England again," James noted.

He also revealed that he may have driven himself too hard in his determination to play at the South Africa World Cup.

The Portsmouth goalkeeper told the paper that he does not know whether or not he is Fabio Capello's favourite for the position.

Earlier this month, James wrote a column for the Observer in which he suggested that football teams needed to engage more with their local communities.

He admitted that when he was younger he had believed football clubs needed a "hard persona", but changed his mind after visiting hospital patients when he was a Watford player.
