FIFA World Cup tours news: 100 up for Wayne Rooney

01/02/2010

Wayne Rooney has scored his 100th Premier League goal and won praise from Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup.

The England striker reached the milestone during the 3-1 thrashing of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, his 22nd goal this season and positive news for those hoping to see the player hit top form during the country's World Cup tour.

Ferguson claimed that the striker's performance was "unbelievable" and that the Gunners never looked as though they could deal with the threat he posed.

"I think he was the key point for us because they just couldn't handle him. Everything was played towards him, behind him or in front of him, he was on it all the time," said the veteran boss.

Meanwhile, England coach Fabio Capello's planning for this summer's World Cup tour may have been made simpler by the return to action of Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.

However, James was unable to prevent rock-bottom Pompey slumping to another defeat - this time 2-0 at Manchester City.
