FIFA World Cup news: Aaron Lennon hit with new injury scare
14/04/2010
Aaron Lennon's chances of featuring in England's FIFA World Cup plans have been dealt a fresh blow.
The Tottenham winger has not played in 2010 having missed three months of action with a groin strain and has now suffered another injury setback in a training session for the London club.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said he was not sure of the extent of the knock, but expressed confidence that the youngster should be back in time for the FIFA World Cup.
"I hope he's fit to play for Tottenham first and foremost," Redknapp added.
Whether or not Three Lions boss Fabio Capello will be prepared to gamble on a player short of match fitness is another matter and could lead the Italian to choose one of Lennon's rivals for the position.
The likes of James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Theo Walcott are all thought to be in the running for the role of right-sided midfielder at the FIFA World Cup.
Capello is a known fan of Milner, having told Spain's Gol Television the Aston Villa man has been this season's most improved player.
