Graham Gooch has left Essex to take up a full-time role as batting coach to the England cricket team.

The former national team captain combined his England role with the Essex batting coach job, but he announced that he is no longer able to do both jobs.

"I never wanted to relinquish this role at the Club working with Paul [Grayson, the Essex head coach] but as my England commitments have grown it is now impossible to do justice to both roles," Gooch said, adding he will continue as a club ambassador for Essex.

Those enjoying hospitality packages at Lord's can enjoy seeing the fruits of Gooch's labours in the Test matches next summer against the West Indies and South Africa.

It was at the home of cricket that Gooch made his highest Test score, hitting 333 against India in 1990.

He also became the first batsman in history to score a triple century and a century in the same first-class game when he made 123 in the second innings of that match.
