England football fans have been told by Sir Alex Ferguson that Wayne Rooney has the potential to be the best player at the South Africa World Cup.

The Manchester United striker has had a mixed time representing his country in international tournaments. He burst onto the scene at the 2004 European Championships, scoring four times in the group stage before fracturing a metatarsal in the quarter-final defeat to Portugal.

Then in 2006, he faced more misery against the Portuguese when he was sent off in another loss in the last eight.

However, Ferguson forecast that Rooney's fortunes are set to change at the forthcoming tournament.

"Rooney is capable of being the star of the World Cup," he said. "I think he's a growing player. He is young and I have seen his development in the last few years. He's a fantastic player."

England football fans will be hoping to see Rooney add to his tally of 25 goals in 57 appearances for the national side at the South Africa World Cup.ADNFCR-2911-ID-19560016-ADNFCR
