World Cup 2010 news: Warnock putting club before country

21/01/2010

Stephen Warnock has said he is less concerned with playing in World Cup 2010 than he is about achieving success at Aston Villa.

The full-back has been tipped by pundits to challenge Wayne Bridge for the role of back-up to Ashley Cole for the forthcoming tournament.

But he revealed he is keeping World Cup 2010 at the back of his mind as he looks to help his club side push on in the Premier League and Carling Cup.

Warnock got on the score sheet in the cup competition last night during Villa's dramatic 6-4 victory over Blackburn Rovers and he expressed his determination to go on and lift the trophy.

"Villa are in the spotlight and one of the reasons I came to this club is because I knew they are capable of challenging for trophies," he said.

Despite this, he said he is keeping his fingers crossed over a place in England's World Cup 2010 squad, which he said is a "dream for every player".
