World Cup tour news: David Beckham shines for AC Milan
07/01/2010
David Beckham's performance on his second AC Milan debut suggested that England fans planning a World Cup tour will get to see him in action in South Africa this summer.
The veteran midfielder made the first appearance of his latest loan spell at the San Siro on Wednesday, helping the Rossoneri to a 5-2 victory over Genoa.
Unusually, Beckham played in an advanced position as part of a three-man frontline, but he adapted to the role well and created several good scoring chances.
Afterwards, AC Milan coach Leonardo praised the 34-year-old former England captain for his versatility and technical ability.
"He has extraordinary quality and tactical intelligence," said the Brazilian.
Beckham has joined the Serie A club on loan from LA Galaxy for the second season in succession, after being told by England coach Fabio Capello that he needs to be playing good quality club football if he wants to prolong his international career.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star is already his country's most-capped outfield player, but needs to be part of England's World Cup tour party if he is to have a chance of equalling Peter Shilton's record of 125 caps.
