In fact, so confident is he in the abilities of the British and Irish players - eight of whom are in the top 20 in the world - he believes that they could compete well in the tournament without their European counterparts.
"We've always had one or two great, great players and we now have a great depth to the team," he remarked.
Although continental sportsmen were brought in back in 1979 to boost the squad's performance, home-grown players have been putting well on the US tour this year.
One British and Irish golfer who may make the grade for the Ryder Cup is Padraig Harrington, as European captain Colin Montgomerie stated this week that he is sure he will play his way into the competition.
