Lee Mears 'has never disappointed for England'

17/09/2010

Jason Leonard believes Lee Mears has always measured up to international standards when called on to play in England rugby team fixtures.

The legendary former England prop claimed Mears is an integral part of Bath's front row, which he described as being a "very important" area for the West Country outfit, reports the Bath Chronicle.

Although the hooker has managed to make the number two shirt at Bath his own, he has fallen behind Dylan Hartley, Steve Thompson and George Chuter in the national pecking order.

Despite this, Leonard - who was capped 114 times by England and five times by the British and Irish Lions - was glowing in his praise for Mears.

It could act as a confidence booster for the hooker as he battles to win a place in the squad for England rugby team fixtures.

"He's always been criticised for being too small, which I found a little harsh as he's always done well for Bath and England," Leonard remarked.
