South Africa World Cup news: Leighton Baines eager for England selection
02/03/2010
Leighton Baines has expressed his desire to stake a place in Fabio Capello's South Africa World Cup plans.
The Everton defender is likely to be one of the main contenders for England's vacant left-back slot, after Wayne Bridge ruled himself out of the South Africa World Cup reckoning last month.
And Capello's regular first choice in the position, Ashley Cole, suffered a fractured ankle in Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Everton and was ruled out for three months.
Baines revealed he is eager to take his chance and be named as part of the Three Lions' squad for the international tournament.
Speaking to Everton's official website, he said: "I think every player in and around the squad will be thinking about the World Cup. It's a way off yet but it's only natural for it to be on your mind."
He added that Everton's recent good form has helped to get him noticed by England boss Capello.
