Marin Cilic wins Aegon championship
18/06/2012
Marin Cilic has picked up the Aegon Championship title at Queen's Club after a tournament of surprises ended in the disqualification of opponent David Nalbandian.
The Argentine had taken the first set, but was then disqualified for unsportsmanlike after kicking an advertising hoarding, which struck a line-judge on the leg and caused the victim to need treatment for a bleeding shin.
While the manner of the victory was unsatisfactory for neutrals, those enjoying Wimbledon hospitality may be keen to see if Cilic can build on his success on the other side of London.
The tournament saw big names like Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Roddick making shock early exits, with Tsonga also suffering a finger injury that may threaten his Wimbledon participation.
Another big name suffering a shock defeat on grass was Roger Federer, who was defeated 7-6, 6-4 in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle by German wildcard Tommy Haas.
This followed the defeat of Rafael Nadal earlier in the tournament to the little-known Philip Kohlschreiber.
