McIlroy leads the pack at US Open

Open Championship hospitality guests who will cheer Rory McIlory on at Sandwich next month may be pleased to hear he has started strongly at the US Open.

The Northern Irishman carded a stunning 65 yesterday (June 16th) to lead the field at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland after the first day's play, three shots ahead of his nearest challengers, Korean Y E Yang and current Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.

McIlroy recorded a bogey-free round that included six birdies and 17 greens in regulation as he seeks to recover from his disappointment at Augusta earlier this year.

In that tournament, he led for three of the four rounds, before a collapse on the back nine on the final day saw him fall out of contention.

After yesterday's play, the 22-year-old said: "I played really good out there, didn't make any mistakes, which in a U.S. Open is huge," adding it is important to keep his run of form going.
