McLaren: We can beat Red Bulls

Motorsport fans who will be Silverstone hospitality guests for the British Grand Prix next month may be encouraged to hear that McLaren are still confident the championship-leading Red Bulls can be caught.

After the first seven races of the season, defending world champion Sebastian Vettel has won six, with Lewis Hamilton picking up the other victory in China, but the British team are adamant that the title is not a foregone conclusion.

"The championship is still there for the taking," McLaren's technical director Paddy Lowe said ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, which takes place on Sunday (June 12th), adding the team can take confidence from their recent performances on the slow circuits in Monaco and Spain.

However, he noted that while their race pace is on a par with their rivals, single lap speed during qualifying is an area where they must improve if they are to overhaul the Red Bulls.

"If we can close the gap in qualifying and get ourselves more on the front foot for a Sunday, we are in a good position to win a lot of races," Lowe added.
