Ireland's rugby captain Brian O'Driscoll is to miss the Six Nations rugby tournament after undergoing surgery that could keep him out of action for six months.

The Leinster star is having an operation on a trapped nerve in his shoulder and it means Ireland will be without the Five/Six nations all-time record try scorer as they take on the likes of England and Wales.

It means the Irish will face the difficult task of replacing one of their top players for the March 17th clash with England at Twickenham.

England's side may also show some changes in personnel - both on and off the field - by the time of the game, with coach Martin Johnson's future still uncertain.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, former England star Brian Moore argued the place where the most change should come is the top, claiming the departure of acting chief executive Martyn Thomas should be followed by that of the rest of the Rugby Football Union board.
