Olly Barkley not relying on McGeechan for England recall

25/08/2010

Olly Barkley has indicated that it is down to him whether he gets to play in front of rugby hospitality fans in an England shirt in the future.

In an interview with the Daily Express, the inside centre - recently dropped by national coach Martin Johnson - said he was grateful his Bath performance director Ian McGeechan is going to meet with England's decision-makers on his behalf.

However, he suggested he knows that in order to get back into the team it is on him to perform.

"If anything comes from it, then great, but I'm not going to rely on Geech's relationship with them to get closer to England. That's my job," Barkley said.

The 28-year-old, who has 23 national caps, could get the opportunity to prove himself next week as the Aviva Premiership gets underway.

Bath have their first match of the new season away at Leeds Carnegie on Sunday September 5th 2010.
