Pakistan completed a 3-0 whitewash of England in their Test series in the UAE after the tourists were bowled out for 252 in the third Test to lose by 71 runs.

Chasing 324 to win was always likely to be a tough task for an out-of-form batting line-up that had only ever achieved that many or more to win a Test once, back in 1929.

But England had some reason to be optimistic as they began the day on 36 without loss.

However, although many England batsmen got a start, none could pass 50, with Cook making 49 and Prior stranded on the same score when last man Monty Panesar was out.

Fans enjoying hospitality packages at Headingley next summer could now be watching a close battle for top spot in the Test rankings between England and visitors South Africa, who can snatch first place with a 3-0 win in New Zealand next month.

Headingley was in fact the venue the last time England successfully chased down a target of over 300 to win a Test, in 2001.
