Roger Federer signalled his intention to defend his crown at the ATP World Tour Finals event at London's O2 Arena by thrashing Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-0.

The Swiss player was recently overtaken by Andy Murray in the world rankings and may have felt he had a point to prove as he crushed the Spaniard to clinch a semi-final place.

With Novak Djokovic struggling with an injury and Murray out of the tournament with a groin strain, Federer could be set to regain the number three ranking by reaching the final.

Fans keen to see Federer in action again might wish to book hospitality packages for next June's AEGON Championships at Queen's Club.

Explaining his withdrawal from the tournament after struggling through his defeat to David Ferrer, Murray said: "It's one of those things where you kind of hope things are going to get better, but the reality was that wasn't ever going to happen."
