Roger Federer storms into semi-finals
24/01/2012
Roger Federer has become the first man into the Australian Open semi finals with a straight sets win over Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.
The Swiss legend won 6-4 6-3 6-2 and will face the winner of the quarter final tie between Rafael Nadal and Thomas Berdych.
Fans planning to enjoy Wimbledon hospitality this summer may be delighted to see Federer in such good form, with the Swiss star ominously having not yet dropped a set in the tournament, although the same is also true of Nadal.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic did drop a set yesterday in his win over Aussie wildcard Lleyton Hewitt, finally taking the match 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-3.
Commenting after the match, Hewitt said he felt he had done well as the world number one was playing "exceptional" tennis.
He remarked: "Considering where I was a few months ago, three or four months ago, it's a pretty good effort."
