Ryder Cup corporate tickets news: Celtic Manor turf 'may suit the US'
10/06/2010
US fans with Ryder Cup corporate tickets will be hoping a columnist's prediction that the Celtic Manor course could suit the American team proves to be accurate.
Writing for the Herald, Douglas Lowe noted that the turf which makes up the practice putting area and short-game course has come from the third and fourth greens at Wentworth.
The correspondent claimed this could prove to be a good omen for the golfers from across the Atlantic, because America team captain Corey Pavin defeated previous Europe leader Nick Faldo in the final of the World Matchplay Championship at the Surrey course back in 1993.
It means Pavin and his team will "find themselves treading on some favourably historical turf" when they arrive in Newport to play in front of people with Ryder Cup corporate tickets this October, Mr Lowe commented.
However, Team Europe hopeful Graeme McDowell believes Celtic Manor will prove tough for the US due to their inferiority from the tee.
"Driving of the golf ball is key around this course [and] I think we are better drivers of the ball than they are," the Ulsterman said.
