South Africa World Cup news: Rooney injury 'is not serious', says Ferguson

08/04/2010

Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted Wayne Rooney's latest injury scare will not damage his chances of making the South Africa World Cup.

The Manchester United striker was a surprise starter in last night's (April 7th 2010) Champions League clash with Bayern Munich after damaging his right ankle against the German side last week.

Rooney failed to make a dream return to the starting line-up, limping off after suffering a knock to the same ankle and watching his side crash out of the tournament on away goals.

But Ferguson has reassured England football fans that the blow should have little impact on the forward's South Africa World Cup chances.

"He's burst a blood vessel just below the ankle joint," the United boss said. "He won't be out for too long and it was never a serious injury."

The news will be welcomed by Three Lions boss Fabio Capello, who also learned this week that Ashley Cole and Aaron Lennon have recovered from their recent injuries and are back in training.
