Tiger Woods 'not guaranteed Ryder Cup place'

13/08/2010

Tiger Woods is not guaranteed a place in the US team to take on Europe in front of golf lovers with Ryder Cup packages later this year.

Corey Pavin, captain of the American team, claimed media reports indicating that he would select Woods regardless of whether or not the world number one qualifies for the contest on points were incorrect.

"I would not disrespect any of the players that are potential players on the team," Pavin explained. "Obviously there was a misinterpretation of what I said and that is an incorrect quote."

However, Pavin went on to reveal he is still gunning for Woods to earn the right to play in front of people with Ryder Cup packages automatically, saying: "That would be fantastic."

Woods is currently in tenth place on the US Ryder Cup points list, with only the first eight guaranteed a place in the squad.

He will need to overtake the likes of Dustin Johnson and Lucas Glover if he is to earn automatic selection.
