Twenty20 tickets news: Michael Clarke retains Australia captaincy

24/05/2010

Michael Clarke has been retained as captain for the Australia v Pakistan matches to be watched by fans with Twenty20 tickets.

Speculation had been rife that the New South Welshman would be stripped of the position following his side's defeat to England in the final of the World Twenty20, coupled with his below par batting throughout the tournament.

However, Australia's selectors have opted to keep him in the role for the two-match series, which will take place in front of enthusiasts with Twenty20 tickets in England in July 2010, as matches cannot be held in Pakistan for safety reasons.

Andrew Hilditch, the Aussies' chairman of selectors, said Clarke will not always be asked to play with the all-out-attacking style which is typically called for in the shortest form of the game.

"He has a definite role to play in Twenty20 cricket, which predominantly is a little bit different to some," Hilditch explained. "We'll be looking for him to bat through an innings when we need it."

Clarke has scored his 437 runs in Twenty20 internationals at an average of 21.85 and at a rate of just over a run a ball.
