Wimbledon seedings announced

Wimbledon hospitality guests who will attend this year's grand slam event in London may be interested to hear that the All England club has revealed the seedings for the tournament.

World number one and defending champion Rafael Nadal is the top seed in the men's draw, while Andy Murray, fresh from his victory at Queen's earlier this week, is at number four.

The All England club explained how, while the players' ATP Tour rankings are a major factor in determining their seeding, their achievements in previous grass court tournaments are also taken into account.

This has benefited players such as Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, the beaten finalist at Queen's, whose place as the 12th seed is an improvement on his world ranking position of 19.

In the women's draw, Denmark's Caroline Wozniaki is the top seed, while Kim Clijsters was listed at number two, only to pull out of the tournament shortly after the rankings were announced.

Defending champion Serena Williams is therefore the seventh seed, while sister Venus is the 23rd, after both made comebacks from injury this week.

Tournament referee Andrew Jarrett explained their seeding "reflects the balance between their proven records and also their lack of competitive play in the past 12 months".
