Wimbledon tickets news: Championships names first official poet
20/05/2010
Fans with Wimbledon tickets queuing to get into this year's tournament may find themselves entertained by its first ever official poet.
Matt Harvey, a regular on BBC Radio 4's Saturday Live programme, will be looking to write a poem every single day depicting the atmosphere and experiences at the SW19 event.
A life-long fan of the sport, Harvey has finished his first ode to the Wimbledon Championships - entitled The Grandest of Slams - a month before it gets underway on June 21st 2010.
His duties as the official poet will involve him reciting his prose to people with Wimbledon tickets waiting for entry to the event, as well as writing a blog and speaking to fans via Twitter.
"It's an honour," Harvey said of his appointment. "I'm acutely conscious it's the only time I'll come first in anything at Wimbledon, unless you count the queue for strawberries."
As well as live poetry, fans with Wimbledon tickets will be hoping to see a repeat of last year's thrilling final, in which Roger Federer beat Andy Roddick in a 16-14 fifth set tie-break.
