Woods a doubt for Open Championship

29/06/2011

Open Championship hospitality guests looking to cheer on the world's top golfers next month may not be able to see Tiger Woods take part.

This is because the 14-times major winner is struggling to regain fitness from knee and ankle injuries and is unsure whether he will be able to compete.

Woods damaged his Achilles tendon at the Masters earlier this year and has been away from the game since aggravating the condition at the Players Championship in May, where he was forced to pull out after just nine holes of his first round.

Speaking about his chances of taking part in the tournament at Royal St Georges, the former world number one said: "I will come back when I'm 100 per cent. I don't know when that's going to be."

He added he has yet to hit any balls since the injury and is not yet ready to make a return to competitive golf.

Woods has failed to win a tournament since 2009 and has slipped to 17th in the world rankings – a list that is currently headed by Englishmen Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.
