World Cup 2010 news: Phil Jagielka could make England squad, says Neville

04/05/2010

Phil Jagielka has a decent chance to get into the England squad for the Fifa World Cup 2010, according to his captain at Everton.

The Liverpool Echo quoted Phil Neville as saying the defender is in with a shout of being one of the four centre-backs expected to make the trip to South Africa this summer and still has time to impress coach Fabio Capello, with one game left in the Premier League season.

"Hopefully he'll be picked in the squad," the midfielder said. "If he goes away there's warm-up matches and he has got to take his opportunity when he gets it. He won't let anyone down."

Jagielka got his first call-up to the senior England squad in May 2008 but is not a regular for the national side and will face strong competition for a place in the World Cup 2010 team from usual first choices John Terry and Rio Ferdinand and in-form Michael Dawson.
