World Cup 2010 news: Ridgewell hoping to catch Capello's eye

09/04/2010

Liam Ridgewell has said his versatility could put him in the reckoning for England's World Cup 2010 squad.

The Birmingham City defender is able to play at either left-back or centre-half, a factor which he hopes has caught the eye of Three Lions boss Fabio Capello.

He has been in impressive form this season, scoring three times in 27 appearances and helping his club stay in the chase for a European place.

Capello has opted to select Leighton Baines and Neil Warnock ahead of Ridgewell to fill the full-back position in the absence of Ashley Cole, who has only recently begun training again after recovering from a broken ankle.

But despite this, the Blues defender said there is still a chance of him winning a place in the World Cup 2010 squad.

He pointed out that another man capable of playing in the middle of defence or out wide, Joleon Lescott, has been picked by Capello in the past.

"Lescott's got that versatility as well and I think that kind of thing appeals to Capello," Ridgewell said.
