Scotland are one of the two oldest official international rugby teams in the world, having taken on England in the first ever rugby international on the 27 March 1871. A fierce and hard fought rivalry between the sides developed apace and since 1879 each Scotland versus England encounter has seen the victor awarded the Calcutta Cup.
A Calcutta Cup clash takes place annually as part of the Six Nations Championship, a competition that traces its origins all the way back to 1883 and which Scotland have been a part of ever since. Scotland have triumphed in the Six Nations (or the Home Nations and Five Nations in its previous iterations) on eight separate occasions, and have supplemented that success with an impressive fourth place finish at the 1991 Rugby World Cup.
